Matthew 3:13-17
At that time Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John.
But John tried to prevent him, saying,
“I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?”
“Let it be so now,” Jesus replied.
“It is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness in this way.”
Then John permitted him.
As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water.
Suddenly the heavens were opened,
and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and resting on him.
And a voice from heaven said,
“This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased!”

On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there,
and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding.
When the wine ran out, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”
“Woman, what is that to you and to me?” Jesus replied.
“My hour has not yet come.”
His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
Now six stone water jars had been set there for the Jewish rites of purification.
Each could hold from twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus told the servants,
“Fill the jars with water.” So they filled them to the brim.
“Now draw some out,” he said, “and take it to the master of the banquet.”
They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water
that had been turned into wine.

Once again Jesus went out beside the sea. All the people came to him,
and he taught them there. As he was walking along,
he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth.
“Follow me,” he told him, and Levi got up and followed Him.
While Jesus was dining at Levi’s house,
many tax collectors and sinners were eating with him and his disciples
- for there were many who followed him.
When the scribes who were Pharisees saw Jesus eating with these people,
they asked his disciples, “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
On hearing this, Jesus told them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor,
but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

When that evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us cross to the other side.”
After they had dismissed the crowd, they took Jesus with them, since
he was already in the boat. And there were other boats with him.
Soon a violent windstorm came up, and the waves were breaking over the boat,
so that it was being swamped. But Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on the cushion.
So they woke him and said, “Teacher, don’t you care that we are perishing?”
Then Jesus got up and rebuked the wind and the sea.
“Silence!” he commanded. “Be still!”
And the wind died down, and it was perfectly calm.

A large crowd followed Jesus, and pressed around him. And a woman was there
who had suffered from bleeding for twelve years.... When she heard about Jesus, she came up through the crowd behind him and touched his cloak. For she kept saying,
“If only I touch his garments, I will be healed.” Immediately her bleeding stopped,
and she sensed in her body that she was healed of her affliction.
At once Jesus was aware that power had gone out from him.
Turning to the crowd, he asked, “Who touched my garments?”
His disciples answered, “You can see the crowd pressing in on you,
and yet you ask, ‘Who touched me?’”

Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus,
a leader of the Jews.He came to Jesus at night and said,
“Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God.
For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.”
Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you,
no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.”
“How can a man be born when he is old?” Nicodemus asked.
“Can he enter his mother’s womb a second time to be born?”
Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God
unless he is born of water and the Spirit.
Flesh is born of flesh, but spirit is born of the Spirit.
Do not be amazed that I said, ‘You must be born again.’

When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.”
“You are a Jew,” said the woman. “How can you ask for a drink from me,
a Samaritan woman?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)
Jesus answered, “If you knew the gift of God and who is asking you for a drink,
you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.
.... Everyone who drinks this well water will be thirsty again.
But whoever drinks the water I give will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give
will become a fountain of water springing up to eternal life....”
God is Spirit, and God’s worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth.

so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.”
“They do not need to go away,” Jesus replied. “You give them something to eat.”
“We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered.
“Bring them here to me,” Jesus said.
And he directed the crowds to sit down on the grass.
Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven,
he spoke a blessing. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples,
and the disciples gave them to the people.
They all ate and were satisfied,
and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.
About five thousand men were fed, besides women and children.”

After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James, and John,
and led them up a high mountain by themselves.
There he was transfigured before them. His clothes became radiantly white,
brighter than any launderer on earth could bleach them.
And Elijah and Moses appeared before them, talking with Jesus.
Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—
one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
For they were all so terrified that Peter did not know what else to say.
Then a cloud appeared and enveloped them, and a voice came from the cloud:

was sitting beside the road. When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth,
he began to cry out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”
Many people admonished him to be silent, but he cried out all the louder,
“Son of David, have mercy on me!”
Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” So they called the blind man.
“Take courage!” they said. “Get up! He is calling for you.”
Throwing off his cloak, Bartimaeus jumped up and came to Jesus.
“What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked.
“Rabboni,” said the blind man, “Let me see again.”
“Go,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you.”

‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’ So he divided his property between them.
After a few days, the younger son got everything together and journeyed
to a distant country, where he squandered his wealth in wild living.
After he had spent all he had, a severe famine swept through that country,
and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out
to a citizen of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed the pigs....
Finally he came to his senses and said,
‘How many of my father’s hired servants have plenty of food,
but here I am, starving to death! I will get up and go back to my father
and say to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.
I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants.’

Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, the hometown of Lazarus,
whom he had raised from the dead. So they hosted a dinner for Jesus there.
Martha served, and Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him.
Then Mary took about a pint of expensive perfume, made of pure nard,
and she anointed Jesus’ feet and wiped them with her hair.
And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.
But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was going to betray him,
asked, “Why wasn’t this perfume sold for three hundred denarii
and the money given to the poor?”
Judas did not say this because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief.
As keeper of the money bag, he used to take from what was put into it.
