Mark 11:1, 7-10

As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany

at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent out two of his disciples…

They led the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, and he sat on it.

Many in the crowd spread their cloaks on the road,

while others spread branches they had cut from the fields.

The ones who went ahead and those who followed were shouting:

“Hosanna!”

“Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!”

“Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!”

“Hosanna in the highest!”

When they arrived in Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple courts

and began to drive out those who were buying and selling there.

He overturned the tables of the money changers

and the seats of those selling doves.

And he would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts. Then Jesus began to teach them, and he declared,

“Is it not written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all the nations’?

But you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’”

As Jesus was sitting opposite the treasury,

he watched the crowd putting money into it.

And many rich people put in large amounts.

Then one poor widow came and put in two small copper coins,

which amounted to a small fraction of a denarius.

Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “Truly I tell you,

this poor widow has put more than all the others into the treasury.

For they all contributed out of their surplus,

but she out of her poverty has put in all she had to live on.”

Truly, truly, I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies,

it remains only a seed. But if it dies, it bears much fruit.”

John 13:1-5

It was now just before the Passover Feast, and Jesus knew

that his hour had come to leave this world and return to the Father.

Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the very end.

The evening meal was underway, and the devil had already

put into the heart of Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus.

Jesus knew that the Father had delivered all things into his hands,

and that he had come from God and was returning to God.

So he got up from the supper, laid aside his outer garments,

and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that,

he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet

and dry them with the towel that was around him.

A new commandment I give you:

Love one another.

As I have loved you, so you also must love one another.

By this everyone will know that you are my disciples,

if you love one another.

John 14:1-4

Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe in me as well.

In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so,

would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back

and welcome you into my presence, so that you also may be where I am.

You know the way to the place where I am going.

Pilate went back into the Praetorium, summoned Jesus,

and asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?”

“Are you saying this on your own?” Jesus asked,

“or did others tell you about me?”

“Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied.

“Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me.

What have you done?”

Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world;

if it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jews.

But now my kingdom is not of this realm.”

There is no scripture that served to inspire this piece.

Rather, it is for a worship service (or element of a service)

that is conducted during Holy Week, called "Tenebrae" -- which means "The Darkness"

There are many variations, but the one I experienced was in

a sanctuary, lit only by candles.

The music was muted and somber. At the end of the service, mall the decorations at the altar

– the chalice, the kneelers, the banners, the flowers, everything –

were slowly taken away.

The music stopped.

Then, one by one, the candles were snuffed out.

We were left in silence and darkness.

It is a devastating ritual commemorating the death of Jesus.

When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so they could go and anoint the body of Jesus....

When they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe

sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed.

But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed.

You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified.

He has risen! He is not here!”
