Exodus 3:1-4

Moses was shepherding the flock of his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian.

He led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God.

There the angel of the LORD appeared to him in a blazing fire from within a bush.

Moses saw the bush ablaze with fire, but it was not consumed. So Moses thought,

“I must go over and see this marvelous sight. Why is the bush not burning up?”

When the LORD saw that he had gone over to look,

God called out to him from within the bush, “Moses, Moses!”

“Here I am,” he answered.”

Then Moses asked God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them,

‘The God of your ancestors has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’

What should I tell them?”

God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites:

‘I AM has sent me to you.’”

And the LORD went before them in a pillar of cloud to guide their way by day,

and in a pillar of fire to give them light by night, so that they could travel by day or night. Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night

left its place before the people.

Exodus 16:2-4, 14

And there in the desert the whole congregation of Israel

grumbled against Moses and Aaron.

“If only we had died by the LORD’s hand in the land of Egypt!” they said.

“There we sat by pots of meat and ate our fill of bread,

but you have brought us into this desert to starve this whole assembly to death!”

Then the LORD said to Moses, “Behold, I will rain down bread from heaven for you.

Each day the people are to go out and gather enough for that day.

In this way I will test whether or not they will follow my instructions....”

[In the morning] When the layer of dew had evaporated,

there were thin flakes on the desert floor, as fine as frost on the ground.

Exodus 17:1-6

Then the whole congregation of Israel left the Desert of Sin,

moving from place to place as the LORD commanded. They camped at Rephidim,

but there was no water for the people to drink.

So the people quarreled with Moses, “Give us water to drink.”

“Why do you quarrel with me?” Moses replied. “Why do you test the LORD?”

But the people thirsted for water there, and they grumbled against Moses:

“Why have you brought us out of Egypt—

to make us and our children and livestock die of thirst?”

Then Moses cried out to the LORD,

“What should I do with these people? A little more and they will stone me!”

And the LORD said to Moses, “Walk on ahead of the people

and take some of the elders of Israel with you.

Take along in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go.

Behold, I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb.

And when you strike the rock, water will come out of it for the people to drink.”

So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel.”

Exodus 24:15-18

When Moses went up on the mountain, the cloud covered it, and the glory of the LORD

settled on Mount Sinai. For six days the cloud covered it,

and on the seventh day the LORD called to Moses from within the cloud.

And the sight of the glory of the LORD was like a consuming fire on the mountaintop

in the eyes of the Israelites.

Moses entered the cloud as he went up on the mountain,

and he remained on the mountain forty days and forty nights.
