John 1:1-5

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God,

and the Word was God.

He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made;

without him, nothing was made that has been made.

In him was life, and that life was the light of all humankind.

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

Luke 2:8-14

And there were shepherds residing in the fields nearby,

keeping watch over their flocks by night.

Just then an angel of the Lord stood before them,

and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.

But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid!

For behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people:

Today in the city of David a Savior has been born to you.

He is Christ the Lord! And this will be a sign to you:

You will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.”

And suddenly there appeared with the angel

a great multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying:

“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to all.”

When the angels had left them and gone into heaven,

the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go to Bethlehem

and see this thing that has happened,

which the Lord has made known to us.”

So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph and the baby,

who was lying in the manger. After they had seen the Child,

they spread the message they had received about him.

And all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.

But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.

Now there was a man in Jerusalem named Simeon,

who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel,

and the Holy Spirit was upon him. The Holy Spirit had revealed to him

that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.

Led by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts.

And when the parents brought in the child Jesus

to do for him what was customary under the Law,

Simeon took him in his arms and blessed God, saying:

“Sovereign Lord, as You have promised,

You now dismiss Your servant in peace.

For my eyes have seen Your salvation,

which You have prepared in the sight of all people,

a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to Your people Israel.”

Matthew 2:13-15, 19-22

When the Magi had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream.

“Get up!” he said. “Take the child and his mother and flee to Egypt.

Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”

So he got up, took the child and his mother by night, and withdrew to Egypt,

where he stayed until the death of Herod.

This fulfilled what the Lord had spoken through the prophet:

“Out of Egypt I called My Son.”

After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt.

“Get up!” he said. “Take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel,

for those seeking the child’s life are now dead.”

So Joseph got up, took the child and his mother, and went to the land of Israel.

But when he learned that Archelaus was reigning in Judea

in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there.

And having been warned in a dream, he withdrew to the district of Galilee,

and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth.
